Economic changes have lead to more variety in the luxury travel audience, which is turning out to be a very good thing for the industry. The time to connect further with loved ones, unwind, and stimulate the senses have come to be noted as of much value as other, more traditionally available features.
According to Deanna Ting in a recent Travel Age West article, the very definition of the word "luxury" has become quite flexible and inclusive of experiences that energize the spirit, rejuvenate the body, and stimulate the mind. So, a massage delivered to the villa might be viewed as essential to the stay as having a butler on call may have been in the past.
Travelers today are more active and self-sufficient and want more control over the quality of the overall experience. They are also realizing that there are, in fact, many levels of what might be considered luxury, and that it's more affordable than many imagine!
